Your iPad or iPhone can Understand Your Speech! It’s Free!

July 27, 2010

I have used and evaluated lots of iPhone and iPad apps for senior citizens but I think this one is my all-time favorite.  Here is the description from the Apple iTunes Preview:

Dragon Dictation is an easy-to-use voice recognition application powered by Dragon® NaturallySpeaking® that allows you to easily speak and instantly see your text or email messages. In fact, it’s up to five (5) times faster than typing on the keyboard.

With Dragon Dictation you can also dictate status updates directly to your Social Networking applications (Facebook and Twitter) or send notes and reminders to yourself….all using your voice.  So when you’re on-the-go, stop typing and start speaking – from short text messages to longer email messages, and anything in between.

and here are some testimonials:

Press Reviews:

David Pogue – The New York Times : “I’m finding Dragon to be a much faster, more efficient way to spit out e-mail messages, notes, text messages and Twitter updates. It’s really, really cool.”

Mel Martin – TUAW.com: “Put this into the ‘I didn’t think they could ever get this to work on an iPhone’ category. I’m talking about Dragon Dictation from Nuance, the developers of the very popular Dragon Naturally Speaking for the PC.”

Arik Hesseldahl – BusinessWeek: “For the last few days I’ve been trying two Nuance iPhone apps, Dragon Dictation and Dragon Search on my iPhone. And while they’re not the first voice search or dictation apps for the iPhone, I certainly like the results I’ve been getting.”

iTunes Reviews:

Miker55 – “It’s understood everything I’ve said. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve been driving and wanted to text someone but couldn’t. This app is great!!!”

Twebs – “For me Dragon dictation is a game changing application. The accuracy is outstanding and it’s very easy to use. I immediately notified everyone I know with an iPhone to pick up this application while it’s still free.”

Redman042 – “I can’t believe my iPhone can do this. Accuracy is amazingly good and transcription is very fast. You can’t even tell that transcription is being done online. I’m very very impressed.”

This is so significant for senior citizens that many seniors would purchase the iPhone or iPad for this feature alone.  I know seniors who have given up on the idea of making significant use of e-mail and other applications that require text entry just because using a keyboard is so difficult for them.  This application changes the game forever!

My wife and I have been using voice recognition software for many years and have suffered through huge “growing pains” with it.  I never thought I would see the day when we would be able to just “plug and play” a program that would have this level of recognition and sophistication without any voice training or steep learning curve.  All I can say is, you have to try it to believe it!   Here’s my testimonial:  I wrote a significant part of this post using only my voice, this software and my iPhone!
