Most aging folks would prefer to stay in their own homes as they grow older. However, many of their homes are not well-suited to disabilities and impairments with which they may deal, and the cost of updating or remodeling to make such houses more usable for them is prohibitive for many, if not most.
For those reasons, seniors and their caregivers may want to become familiar with The Association of Assistive Technology Act Programs. According to its website…
The Association of Assistive Technology Act Programs (ATAP) is a national, member-based organization, comprised of state Assistive Technology Act Programs funded under the Assistive Technology Act (AT Act).
ATAP was established in 1997 to provide support to state AT Program members to enhance the effectiveness of AT Programs on the state and local level, and promote the national network of AT Programs. ATAP facilitates the coordination of state AT Programs nationally and provides technical assistance and support to its members. ATAP represents the needs and interests of the state AT Programs and is the national voice of the AT Programs.
The web site list all states that have programs under the federal Act, along with contact information for each state, along with a summary of state financing activities.
In some cases state agencies organized under that Assistive Technology Act may help home owners to find funding for modifications to their property that will improve their quality of life. A recent article in the on-line Wall Street Journal suggests some other sources of assistance for aging home owners, as well.
