Seniors Learning About Computers

The Fox news website recently published an article that strongly supports what we are trying to do in this blog. The title of the article is the title of this post:  Why Grandma Should Get Online. In my previous post I briefly discussed some of the benefits of technology used by senior citizens, as well as some of the reasons for potential resistance. The Fox news article expands upon that theme, citing research.

I mentioned that isolation and depression go hand-in-hand for many senior citizens. The writer of this article quotes a recent study by the Phoenix Center for Advanced Legal and Economic Public Policy Studies:   “increased Internet access and use by senior citizens enables them to connect with sources of social support when face to face interaction becomes more difficult.” More social support-less depression-better mental health.

The article goes on to describe some of the impediments faced by seniors to the use of the Internet and other computer technologies. Clearly, designers and manufacturers need to continue the trend toward better access and ease of use for the aging population. On the bright side, there is a great deal of awareness and research around this issue.

Most of those who are reading this have already adopted the use of computers and the Internet. You are generally aware of the benefits. My goal is to persuade and enable you to involve those who are not engaged. When we engage them, we benefit as well. They are happier and healthier, which benefits everyone. They also gain a tremendous source of communication.Even though sometimes frustrating process of learning how to use the new technologies can be mentally and physically stimulating when it holds the promise of great benefits. Let’s get grandma online!
